Memorial Park
The Memorial Park is a tribute to the Chinese immigrants who first came to California in search of gold, and later became builders of the levees and railroads, then finally helped to settle the farms and towns of the west. Locke Memorial Park was constructed on a vacant lot which once contained a building that burned down on Main Street in 1984. On June 9, 2006, the Locke Foundation began construction of the park. The following year, the Locke Memorial Park dedication ceremony was held on October 8, 2006.
The park was designed by Whitney Mar, son of George Mar who operated the adjacent Yuen Chong Market. The black granite monument was designed by a local artist, Elise Mar. Elise is the daughter of park designer Whitney Mar and the granddaughter of former Locke resident George Mar.
